THE OXFORD FLYING JACKET REPRINTS 1950 - 1953

PAGE SIX OF EIGHT

THERE WERE 85 DIFFERENT EDITIONS OF THE 20 OXFORD BIGGLES BOOK TITLES PUBLISHED BY “OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS”

BETWEEN 1946 AND 1953.

THIS PAGE GIVES THE INFORMATION ABOUT THE 45 FLYING JACKET REPRINTS PUBLISHED FROM 1950 TO 1953 INCLUSIVE

1950

IN 1950 NINE BIGGLES TITLES WERE REPRINTED.  THOSE 9 TITLES WERE:-

BIGGLES – AIR COMMODORE

BIGGLES FLIES SOUTH

BIGGLES FLIES NORTH

THE RESCUE FIGHT

BIGGLES IN SPAIN

BIGGLES – SECRET AGENT

BIGGLES IN THE SOUTH SEAS

BIGGLES IN THE BALTIC

BIGGLES – CHARTER PILOT

NONE OF THESE NINE BOOKS HAD

ECONOMY DUST WRAPPERS

THEY HAD NORMAL DUST JACKETS

NONE OF THESE BOOKS HAD A

COLOUR FRONTISPIECE

ALL OF THESE 1950 BOOKS WERE PRICED AT FIVE SHILLINGS

5/-

The book boards are now consistently a light green with either silver or gold titles

There is more consistency with the use of the author’s name.  He is W. E. Johns on every book bar one.

“Biggles – Charter Pilot” refers to the author as Johns.  Because the book is so thin the title is on the book longways otherwise it would have been very difficult to get on.

1951

IN 1951 SIXTEEN BIGGLES TITLES WERE REPRINTED.  THOSE 16 TITLES WERE:-

BIGGLES FLIES EAST

BIGGLES HITS THE TRAIL

BIGGLES FLIES WEST

BIGGLES FLIES SOUTH

BIGGLES GOES TO WAR

BIGGLES FLIES NORTH

THE RESCUE FLIGHT

BIGGLES IN SPAIN

BIGGLES IN THE SOUTH SEAS

THEY HAD NORMAL DUST JACKETS

NONE OF THESE BOOKS HAD A

COLOUR FRONTISPIECE

ALL OF THESE 1951 BOOKS WERE PRICED AT FIVE SHILLINGS

5/-

The book boards are now are darker green with the titles in red.

There is more consistency with the use of the author’s name.  He is W. E. Johns on every book.  Two books, ‘Biggles Defies the Swastika’ and ‘Biggles in Spain’ have W. E. Johns lower down the spine than the others.

“Biggles – Charter Pilot” refers to the author as just as ‘Johns’ because the book is so thin.

The title is on the book longways otherwise it would have been very difficult to get on.

1952

IN 1952 SEVENTEEN BIGGLES TITLES WERE REPRINTED.  THOSE 17 TITLES WERE:-

BIGGLES – CHARTER PILOT

BIGGLES IN BORNEO

NONE OF THESE SEVENTEEN BOOKS HAD ECONOMY DUST WRAPPERS

THEY HAD NORMAL DUST JACKETS

NONE OF THESE BOOKS HAD A

COLOUR FRONTISPIECE

ALL OF THESE 1952 BOOKS WERE PRICED AT SIX SHILLINGS

6/-

This is the first rise in price for a number of years.  The Biggles books had effectively been priced at five shillings since 1943.

That is effectively a decade!

The book boards are now all the same shade of light green.

There is more consistency with the use of the author’s name.  He is W. E. Johns on the spine boards of every book.  Again, the same two books, ‘Biggles Defies the Swastika’ and ‘Biggles in Spain’ have W. E. Johns lower down the spine than the others, but here you only see that on “Biggles Defies the Swastika”.  That is because “Biggles in Spain” is published next year, 1953, with the same positioning of the author’s name.

“Biggles – Charter Pilot” refers to the author as just as ‘Johns’.  The book is so thin the title is on the book longways otherwise it would have been very difficult to get on.

NB – Both Biggles in Africa 1952 and Biggles Air Commodore 1952 had two DIFFERENT coloured board versions.

One is dark green and one is light green.

Clearly the light green one is the one that is uniform with all of the other 1952 reprints.

You can see the differences here

1953

IN 1953 THREE BIGGLES TITLES WERE REPRINTED.  THEY WERE THE THREE TITLES THAT WAS NOT PRINTED THE YEAR PREVIOUSLY

THOSE 3 TITLES WERE:-

BIGGLES HITS THE TRAIL

THE RESCUE FLIGHT

BIGGLES IN SPAIN

NONE OF THESE THREE BOOKS HAD

ECONOMY DUST WRAPPERS

THEY HAD NORMAL DUST JACKETS

NONE OF THESE BOOKS HAD A

COLOUR FRONTISPIECE

ALL OF THESE 1953 BOOKS WERE PRICED AT SIX SHILLINGS

6/-

The book boards are the same green as the 1952 release of 17 books so you could now get a full set of all 20 Oxford Biggles books in the identical binding.

I had always thought that 1953 was the last time that Oxford University Press published a Biggles book.

I know they let the rights revert back to the author, Captain W. E. Johns, as Brock Books (a division of Hodder & Stoughton) published four of the Oxford books in 1960.

BIGGLES – SECRET AGENT

BIGGLES SEES IT THROUGH

SPITFIRE PARADE

BIGGLES IN BORNEO

You can see picture of the covers of those books either side.

However, I have discovered that Oxford University Press published an abridged educational version of “Biggles & Co” in 1966.

That appears to be the last Oxford University Press book.  You can see that book below
