V.                    GINGER GOES SCOUTING  (Pages 66 – 75)

“One of these days somebody will plug the drunken swine” Biggles growls to Ginger as they arrive back at the hangar.  They tell Wilks what has happened.  With the transfer document Wilks says they can give McBain his marching orders.  They discuss the weather and Gingers offers to go and look at the sky.  Seeing a light at a building attached to McBain’s hangar, Ginger goes to investigate.  Looking in the window, Ginger sees Sarton, Ferroni, Chicot and the Indian.  McBain is not there.  Ginger finds a chink in the logs that he is able to peep through and he sees McBain arrive.  McBain seems agitated and his face is pale.  Sarton tells McBain that he has been a long time.  McBain says it’s a lie and he ain’t been five minutes and that’s what they should tell anyone who asks.  McBain says that he has just been outside watching the weather.  Ginger overhears the men discussing the sending of the gold and talking about finishing Bigglesworth soon when Delaney is out on patrol.  Ginger returns to Biggles and Wilks and tells them that McBain is after the gold.  Wilks says “Kick me, somebody, I never even thought of it”.
