XIV. AN
UNEXPECTED LANDING (Pages
154 – 161)
The crew of the Jupiter soon see the
Weinkel in the far distance bearing west.
It is not going to Fort Beaver. The
Weinkel then starts to descend, in order to land in the middle of nowhere. Biggles is able to land his Jupiter aircraft
first in order to remain undetected. He
lands the other side of a line of spruce and fir about a mile from the
Weinkel. Biggles, Algy, Ginger and Wilks
then run to the far edge of the timber from where the country to the south lays
open to their view, so they can see what is going on. They see the Weinkel standing by a small log
cabin near the edge of a lake. Biggles
does not doubt that they are unloading the gold, although exact details can’t
be seen. The Weinkel then takes off and
heads south-east, that being the direction of Fort Beaver. Returning to the Jupiter, the four airmen
also take off to fly back to Fort Beaver.
On arrival, from the air, Biggles can see the Weinkel on the aerodrome
with McBain and Ferroini standing beside it and they
are talking to Delaney, the Mountie.
Landing, Biggles sees the Moose Creek gold boxes being unloaded. They haven’t stolen the gold at all - Biggles
simply can’t understand it.
