VII.                 "ONE GOOD TURN ..."  (Pages 87 - 99)

Whilst hiding from Hervey and Brickwell, Biggles and Smith force their way through a hedge into the large garden of a house named "The Garth".  Here they see a jackdaw bird with something shiny in its beak go into a hollow branch.  Some days later, they go to visit Mrs. Grant, the lady with the cave in her garden, only to find her distressed as her sister, Vera, has been arrested by the police on suspicion of theft.  When Biggles learns that Vera works for Major and Mrs. Travers who live at "The Garth" he suspects the jackdaw may have taken the ring.  Going back to the tree in the garden of house, Biggles climbs the tree to investigate, whilst Smith keeps watch, but the branch is rotten and breaks off and Biggles is only saved from a nasty fall by Major Travers and his gardener, Blake, bringing a ladder in the nick of time.  Biggles explains to the Major why he is there and on investigation, the missing ring is found in the hollow branch.  The Major gives both Biggles and Smith a box of chocolates and a couple of shillings each and then goes to get Vera released from police custody.  The boys immediately go to see Mrs. Grant to give her the good news about her sister.
