27 DIFFERENT BIGGLES TITLES WERE PUBLISHED BY “KNIGHT” BOOKS PLUS 31 REPRINTS WITH DIFFERENT COVERS

Knight books were the paperback division of Brockhampton Press Limited, Leicester. Brockhampton Press had published 29 first edition hardback Biggles books. Knight published 27 individual and separate Biggles titles as paperbacks. Only 21 of the original Brockhampton Press hardbacks became Knight paperbacks – somewhat surprisingly, eight Brockhampton titles were never selected to be paperbacks and they were:-

- BIGGLES AND THE PIRATE TREASURE – BIGGLES TAKES CHARGE – BIGGLES PRESSES ON – BIGGLES AT WORLD’S END – BIGGLES AND THE LEOPARDS OF ZINN –

- BIGGLES AND THE POOR RICH BOY – BIGGLES AND THE MISSING MILLIONAIRE – and – BIGGLES AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA -

Knight paperbacks published a total of 58 Biggles books. 3 books in 1967, 3 books in 1968, 3 books in 1969, 10 books in 1970, 3 books in 1971 and 1 book in 1972.

They then published 4 books in 1974, 8 books in 1975, 2 books in 1978, 4 books in 1979, 4 books in 1980, 2 books in 1982, 2 books in 1983, 4 books in 1984, 2 books in 1985 and 3 books in 1986

They published 27 original different Biggles books and then 31 reprints with different covers, so there are a total of 58 different Biggles Knight paperback books.

These pages DO NOT show EVERY KNIGHT EDITION, showing EVERY SINGLE price –

but they do show the artwork for EVERY different Knight Biggles cover – AND THAT INCLUDES THE REAR COVER INFORMATION AS WELL

PAGE ONE – Shows the very first Knight Biggles paperbacks. These were 6 “Green Knight” books with the white spine and surrounding white border.

PAGE TWO – Shows 15 different book titles, but two of those had slightly different covers, so 17 different covers are shown. These 15 titles included reprints of the first 6 original “Green Knight” paperbacks and so only added a further 9 titles to the range of Knight paperbacks. This page also shows the back of an 18^th book but that is just to show an example of the changes that occurred to the rear covers of the Knight books when the books were reprinted. For example “Green Knight” was changed to “Knight” by the removal of the word “Green”. Of the 15 titles,

3 of these books were published in 1969, 8 were published in 1970, 3 were published in 1971 and 1 was published in 1972.

PAGE THREE – Shows 12 different Knight books. These 12 books have a distinctive “stencilled” title font. 4 of them were published in 1974 and 8 of them were published in 1975.

6 of them were reprints of earlier Knight paperbacks and 6 of them were titles new in paperback, bringing the total number of different Knight Biggles books up to 21.

PAGE FOUR – Shows the 12 Knight paperbacks with a cartoon like Biggles head logo on a coloured title banner. 10 of these were reprints but 2 are first publications new to paperback, bringing the total number of different Knight Biggles books up to 23.

PAGE FIVE – Shows the final 11 Knight Biggles books which had the distinctive “posed” photographic covers. 7 of these are reprints but the other 4 are first publications in paperback bringing the total number of different Knight Biggles books up to 27. Some of these posed photographic covers are, it has to be said, frankly ridiculous!

EFFECTIVELY, NONE OF THE KNGHT PAPERBACK BIGGLES BOOKS WERE ILLUSTRATED*

*There are three exceptions to this. There is a one page map published in “Biggles Flies West” and

two of the last Knight paperbacks published - “Biggles Learns to Fly” and “Biggles Goes to War” featured illustrations.

These two Knight paperbacks used the Armada printing plates with the original Armada illustrations.

Note the uniform covers for the first six “green knight books” all of which cost 3/6 (or 17.5p after decimalisation)

REF G29 – BIGGLES AND THE DARK INTRUDER – FRONT Originally published in April 1967 – This paperback was – uniquely – the first edition of the book. The hardback was not published until February 1970. 190 pages. No cover artist is credited.	REF G29 – BIGGLES AND THE DARK INTRUDER – REAR This book contained no illustrations.	REF G30 – BIGGLES FLIES WEST – FRONT Originally published in 1937 – This paperback was published in 1967. 192 pages. No cover artist is credited. BIGGLES’ CHINESE PUZZLE – FRONT Originally published in 1955 – This paperback was published in August 1967. 191 pages. No cover artist is credited.
